  • A Community Storytelling Workshop intensive with internationally renowned storyteller Carmen Deedy will be hosted by the Appalachian Arts Alliance and InVision Hazard at Hazard City Hall from 9 AM—2 PM on Saturday, September 23rd. The night before, Carmen will be giving a public performance at the Perry County Public Library at 7 PM. The workshop will offer an exciting opportunity to sharpen our communication skills as individuals, organizations, and representatives of our community to the wider world. Please confirm by September 15th if you will be able to attend as spots are limited.

    Carmen Agra Deedy has been writing for children for over two decades. Born in Havana, Cuba, she came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1964. She grew up in Decatur, Georgia, where she lives today.

    Deedy has spent the past twenty years writing and telling stories. She has been an invited speaker at venues as varied as The American Library Association, Refugees International, The International Reading Association, Columbia University, The Smithsonian Institute, TED, The National Book Festival, and the Kennedy Center.
  • The FDIC and other partners are hosting a special event in Hazard on Tuesday This forum is designed for financial institutions and small business resource and development organizations. The intent is to provide attendees with an opportunity to learn about SBA programs, state and local small business initiatives and resources, non-regulatory lenders in the market and the FDIC's Money Smart for Small Business financial education curricula. Participants will be able to identify opportunities to strengthen referral networks and access to capital in their markets. Lunch will be provided. Space in limited - register now.
